Masterclass Peter Lord. Aardman Frame by Frame

When Peter Lord founded the studio Aardman Animations with David Sproxton in 1972 in humble Bristol, they simply wanted to make low-budget animated films. Almost half a century later, Aardman is one of the most influential studios in the animation world with its unique look, thanks, in part, to the incorporation of Nick Park and his unmistakable style as the creator of characters like Wallace & Gromit and Shaun the Sheep. But Aardman’s DNA ‒ iconic characters and a satirical exploration of reality ‒ has been present since the very beginning of the studio.
Peter Lord will share with Animac’s audience his fascinating career as an animator, director, and producer for more than 40 years: the birth of his character Morph, how Peter Gabriel’s Sledgehammer gave a voice to groundbreaking animation, Aardman’s move into animated documentary for adults with Animated Conversations for Channel 4, or how the arrival of Nick Park and his animal characters gave birth to the irreverent franchise Creature Comforts.
With the expansive world of Wallace & Gromit, Aardman enjoyed an international boom, thus showing Lord’s expertise in developing and growing successful IPs with big US studios like Dreamworks (Chicken Run, Flushed Away) or Sony (Arthur Christmas, Pirates!). Since the success of Shaun the Sheep, Aardman has achieved his creative independence in more ways than one. Last 2018, Lord and Sproxton handed over a 75% stake in the business to their 140 employees, leaving Aardman in everyone’s hands. Peter Lord has not only built an empire, he has shared his playground with those who wanted to join in.
