ANIMAC 2015 REDISCOVERS THE LOOK OF THE ARTIST FROM THE 19TH TO THE 22ND OF FEBRUARY IN LLEIDA

Animac, the International Animated Film Festival of Catalonia, rediscovers the work and look of the artist

Animac, commissioned by the City Council of Lleida, celebrates its 19th edition from the 19th to the 22nd of February de 2015 and consolidates once more as the neuralgic center of animation. The Audiovisual Production Center Magical Media joins Llotja and CaixaForum Lleida as a new space for the festival.

Animac will count with an exceptional guest: experimental animator and plastic artist Pierre Hébert, disciple of world-renowned animator Norman McLaren.

Animac has received, in this edition alone, more than 600 national and international films. During the showcase you'll be able to see the most recent films of authors like Alé Abreu, Torill Kove, Jossie Malis or Rita Basulto, among others. It will also host the Catalonian premiere of Rocks In My Pockets, Signe Baumane's Oscar-preselected, crowdfunding-financed feature film.

This year Animac has more than 6.700 student inscriptions in the pedagogical sessions.

Animac, the International Animated Film Festival of Catalonia, commissioned by the City Council of Lleida, celebrates its 19th edition this year, from the 19th to the 22nd of February in Lleida. Four days filled with projections, conferences, workshops and other special activities which will take place in the usual sections of the festival, La Llotja and CaixaForum Lleida. This year, as a new feature, we're also adding the space of the Audiovisual Production Center Magical Media, where the educational workshops will take place.

This year's programme will explore the theme "The Artist's Hand", celebrating that in this digital age, far from being eclipsed by technology, artists are still absolutely fundamental in animation as an art form. Animac 2015 highlights the fact that the youngest artists are redescovering manual techniques as old as stop-motion and updating them with a new look. This year, Animac wants to break the stereotype of digital animation being "made by computer", and praise the creative process, because it still consists of drawing, painting, and in a nutshell, counting with the look and the hand of the artist.

Animac consolidates its programme alternating animated shorts and features, with films from the greatest schools in the entire world, retrospectives and a themed programme focused on manually-elaborated animation.

This year Animac will count with the exceptional presence of experimental animator and plastic artist Pierre Hébert (Montreal 1944), a disciple of world-renowned animator Norman McLaren (Stirling, Scotland 1914-Montreal 1987), who will present his films and his master's, in a "carta blanca" and a conference. This way, Animac joins the celebration of the centenary of McLaren's birth.

This year, the Festival has recieved more than 600 films, both national and international, a hundred more than in its previous edition.

Between the selected films this year you'll be able to see, among others, the winning feature from the previous edition of the Annecy festival, O Menino e o Mundo by Alê Abreu, and the shorts Me and my Moulton by Oscar-winning Torill Kove or Lluvia en los ojos by stop-motion mexican animator Rita Basulto. You'll also be able to see the new works by Catalan and Spanish animators like Bloquejats apilats by Anna Solanas and Marc Riba, Zepo by César Díaz, Bendito Machine V- Pull the Trigger by Jossie Malis, La Princesa China, a wonderful 3D film by Tomàs Bases, Tengo miedo by Laura Ginès and the world premiere of the most iconoclastic film in the festival, by Madrid studio Trimono. This year Animac spotlights the high presence of films made by women in its selection.

Animac will also present the official Catalonian premiere of Rocks In My Pockets, by Signe Baumane (Letonia, 1964), pre-selected to the Oscars and financed by crowdfunding. The film, based on actual events, focuses on the life of five women from the writer and director's family, including herself, and their battles against depression. This film exemplifies this year's theme: venerated in festivals like Annecy or Sundance, Baumane combines her work as an independent animator with the job of painter and sculptor, as well as the illustration of children's books and the sponsorship of a great number of independent animation programs in search of new talents for the medium.

Animac completes its programme with conferences from great authors and animation professionas, workshops, school projections, and the return of Networking & Pitch, three-part call to young industry professionals in which you'll be able to present all kinds of projects, make your work known or offer the services of your animation business or school. The current edition of Animac has more than 6.700 student inscriptions in its pedagogical sections and because of high demands, this year they'll begin on Tuesday, February the 17th.

Animac strengthens once more its pedagogical vocation extending its offer of specialized workshops, from which we highlight: RE-CICLADO, a workshop hosted by Lourdes Villagómez with the Municipal Art School Leandre Cristòfol, where the students will elaborate handmade looped animations with different techniques; a workshop by El Bombeto the Ilerna school centered on a stop-motion experience, the I Love Lleida workshop bu the Social Welfare Council, where young people will explain to us their vision of their neighborhood by pixelation; a seminar with the Communication and Audivisual Journalism Degree in UdL by Manuel Garin from the Pompeu Fabra University, which will focus on the creation experience and the language of videogames, and the Paper Stop workshop, by the Youth Council and La Academia de Animación.

This year, as a new feature, all these workshops will take place in the Audiovisual Production Center Magical Media in Lleida.
