Anime, authorship and paper planes: an aperitif of what we’ll see in Annecy 2019

The landmark animation festival invites Japanese animation in an edition full of auteur films from around the world.

From 10th to 15th of June, the latest edition of worldwide iconic Annecy International Animated Film Festival and Market will pay tribute to Japanese animation with a retrospective of its more than 100 years of history, with Yôichi Kotabe as a Guest of Honor and directors Yoshiaki Nishimura and Koji Yamamura in the official jury. Annecy will also host the European premiere of  “Promare”, a new original feature film by Hiroyuki Imaishi (founder of Studio Trigger), one of the most expressive and wacky pop auteurs from the last decade.

In the short film official selection, Catalan stop-motion animators Anna Solanas and Marc Riba – guests of our latest Animac 2019 – will be present with their piece “I’m not scared of the crocodile”. We will also discover the latest short films of animators well-known by Animac’s audience: “Tio Tomás” by Regina Pessoa (Animac 2016’s special guest), “The Dawn of Ape” by Mirai Mizue (Animac 2017) or “Toomas Beneath the Valley of the Wild Wolves” by Chintis Lundgren (Animac 2018).

The feature film “Buñuel in the Labyrinth of the Turtles” – the brilliant, oneiric biopic directed by Salvador Simó and based on the graphic novel of the same name by Fermín Solís – has also been selected for official competition. A truly international selection where we’ll see the newest films by auteurs like Romanian animator Anca Damian (L’Extraordinaire Voyage de Marona), French director Jéremy Clapin (J’ai perdu mon corps), or Japanese master Masaaki Yuasa, exclusively interviewed by Animac last Annecy 2013 right before he founded his indie studio Science Saru. Yuasa will present his new feature film “Ride Your Wave”, a sea love story that could be paired for a double session with “Lu Over the Wall” (screened last Animac 2018). Among the feature films out of competition, it stands out “Away”, entirely made by 25-year-old Latvian animator Gints Zilbalodis.

This year, Annecy will also hold WIP conferences such as Klaus by Sergio Pablos, the long-awaited feature film produced by The Spa Studios along with Netflix; Weathering With You, the latest feature film by Japanese director Makoto Shinkai after his overwhelming success with “Your Name”; or Primal, Adult Swim’s new adult animated series by Genndy Tartakovsky , creator of cult classic “Samurai Jack”.

In the TV arena, showrunner Dana Terrace will exclusively share materials from her first original series “The Owl House” from Disney, after her work in “Gravity Falls” or the current “Ducktales” reboot. Coming with Dreamworks Animation, Noelle Stevenson will talk about her Netflix superhero series “She-Ra”. And the mind behind “Steven Universe” Rebecca Sugar along with showrunner Ian Jones-Quartey will offer a special conference about the making of her cult queer cartoon (you can read our interview with her last Annecy 2014 here).
