ANIMAC 25 YEARS. FILMMAKERS

This session will be available at Filmin from February 25 to March 7.

The Physics of Sorrow

Canada, 27 min 9s, 2019, encaustic, VOS (english)
Direction: Theodore Ushev
Production: National Film Board of Canada

Considered Theodore Ushev’s later masterwork, the film provides an unconventional account of the history of Bulgaria intertwined with the author’s personal memories. Based on the homonymous novel by Gueorgui Gospodínov, it works as a time capsule where collective and personal emotion weave the story of a man who laments his dislocated present while melancholically evoking his lost past. And Ushev renders his epopee via the little-known encaustic painting technique – also known as hot wax painting – used for the first time ever in an animated film.

Muybridge's Strings

Japan, 12 min, 2011, 2D animation digital drawing, without dialogue
Direction: Koji Yamamura
Production: National Film Board of Canada

Can time be made to stand still? Can it be reversed? Koji Yamamura’s Muybridge's Strings is a meditation on this theme, contrasting the worlds of the photographer Eadweard Muybridge – who in 1878 successfully photographed consecutive phases in the movement of a galloping horse – and a mother who, watching her daughter grow up, realises she is slipping away from her.

Tio Tomás, a contabilidade dos dies (Uncle Thomas, Accounting for the Days)

Portugal, 13 min 3 s, 2019, various techniques, VOS (english)
Direction: Regina Pessoa
Production: Ciclope Filmes, National Film Board of Canada and les Armateurs

From the visual and personal memories of the director of this short, Regina Pessoa, the film is a tribute to her uncle Tomás, a humble man with a simple and anonymous life, who played a key role in her becoming a filmmaker. A moving tribute to a poet of the everyday.

Before Love

Russia, 19 min 15 s, 2016, animated cartoon, without dialogue
Direction: Igor Kovalyov
Production: Bazelevs

It questions solitude, misunderstanding and disunity in our life. The title suggests that every- thing happening to the characters is not yet true love. Human shortcomings tie the dramatic knot of the story. Everybody finds his way of being unhappy. Everybody is looking for love.

Oh Willy...

Belgium, France and Netherlands, 17 min, 2012, stop motion, without dialogue
Direction: Emma De Swaef and Marc James Roels
Production: Beast Animation, Polaris Film & Finance, Vivement Lundi! and il Luster Productions

Forced to return to his naturist roots, Willy bungles his way into noble savagery.

Altötting

Germany, Canada and Portugal, 11 min 41 s, 2020, 2D animation, VOS (French, English and Portuguese)
Direction: Andreas Hykade
Production: National Film Board of Canada

“You know, when I was a boy, I fell in love with the Virgin Mary. It happened in a little Bavarian town called Altötting.” Mesmerising, haunting, and deeply personal, Altötting is a coming-of-age story about love, faith, mortality, and shattered illusions.
